Adtech companies flaunt cookie rules because the UK data regulator doesn't enforce them.

So why might the ICO weaken them further?

It'd make it even easier for advertisers to target people based on mental health, addictions or other vulnerabilities.

What about cookie consent banners?

Under UK law, you need to consent to companies tracking you. But the data regulator has been too lenient in how this is done.

That means we get hit with confusing or manipulative cookie banners.

So most people end up being tracked whether they want to be or not.

How does it work?

Our cookie crumbs left across the Internet form predictive profiles.

These are shared and sold in a real-time bidding system that runs automatically when you visit a website.

The ad space is auctioned based on the interests gleaned by tracking you online. Highest bidder wins.

How do advertisers track you online?

You search for boots and click on a pair you like — just once — then decide they are not what you want.
