The departure was announced during a hearing in LA Superior Court, where Reiner was set to be arraigned on 2 counts of first-degree murder. It suggests that Nick’s 2 siblings may have distanced themselves from Nick & his case, at least financially.

The state charges included the aggravating factor of multiple murders, meaning that if #NickReiner is convicted he will face the possibility of #life in #prison without a chance at parole or the #DeathPenalty. Prosecutors have not said whether they would seek capital punishment; Gov. Gavin Newsom put a #moratorium on #executions in #California in 2019. [were he to lift the moratorium for this case, he’d have to lift to for all.]

After conferring with the judge in her chambers, Jackson said in the courtroom that “we feel we have no choice” to withdraw from the case, without elaborating.

In a statement to The NYT, a spox for the Reiner family said, “They have the utmost trust in the legal process & will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.”

Immediately after #NickReiner was arrested last month, lawyers for the Reiner family arranged for Jackson to take his case, said a person with knowledge of the situation…. The person emphasized that the change in Reiner’s representation had nothing to do with Jackson’s performance & said that he had been a professional throughout the process.

Judge Theresa McGonigle rescheduled Reiner’s arraignment for Feb 23 & assigned his case to Kimberly Greene, a #PublicDefender.
