My first thought was surely they must know that no-one is going to believe that in this week of all weeks.
But then I remembered that I read somewhere that it's an intentional part of fascism that the lies actually *should* be completely obvious lies and unbelievable.
Can't remember the reason for it, but it sure fits the reality.
