I made it to the Fediverse! (I think that's what it's called.)

You guessed it. I'm new here and have no idea what I'm doing. Hello to everyone!

I'm just me, typing out words to a bunch of random people, hoping they will read them. I don't know anyone yet, and it's tough being the new person. So please, take pity on me and say "hello"

I haven't written a profile description yet. I will, I was just very excited to finally be here and wanted to #introduce myself.

Tips and tricks are appreciated!

@stefan

Thank you! I had no clue what I was getting into. To make a short story very long.

I found a link to Mastodon servers on a tech blog. Great, I thought. After looking at the list a minute, turns out, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to look at or how to find it. How do I know what server I want to be on?

I started with one server and found the live feed. If I didn't understand anything being posted or care about what they talked about, I left and tried out a different one.

I didn't notice my home server on the list. I couldn't get through them all, (there's a lot of servers out there). I saw someone else's post somewhere referencing this server. I looked it up, went to the live feed, and people were having regular conversations about less technology related stuff and more stuff I understood or found interesting.

I decided to join. I wasn't prepared for the, "say a little bit about yourself" part. People tend to leave out that gem of information. I can't remember what humiliating jibber jabber I ended up submitting.

After a day, I still hadn't received any response. I just assumed I had done something wrong or the person in charge hadn't stopped laughing at all my drivel and was in the process of relocating the server to parts unknown.

I went actively looking for somewhere else. It was almost a week from when I originally submitted my request that the approval came through.

I was so excited! I hadn't been forgotten! The server wasn't relocating to parts unknown! I was here!

And that brings us to now 😀

@stefan

I love the no ads part. I'm not much of a yeller. Not in public. Into an abyss maybe. Good to know I could yell at the admin if I wanted 👍

@Whimsy

1. Like posts if you want to let the author know you liked it
2. Boost if you want to share it with your followers
3. When posting, you can designate it as public (fully searchable), quiet public (visible on your timeline, but not searchable), followers only, or private mention (essentially a DM)
4. Always include alt text with your pics
5. Use #hashtags if you want your post seen by people following the hashtag
6. Follow hashtags yourself to discover new people sharing your interests
