It goes even further back. When my mom was young, there was guy around who said "that's so gay," "what a fag," etc. All the time. She called him out for being homophonic and he was like "why would I make fun of someone for being homosexual? There's nothing wrong with that!" It just hadn't really occurred to him.

@dogfox @bookstardust yeah this is sort of what I mean, they still make the jokes but for people who are gay and not "too weird" for them, they view them as okay. also I didn't know u were gay twin 
I amn't! I wasn't the one saying that! That happened before she met me!
We have never approved of homophobia in my household (except maybe my dad's parents. They were awful.)
