@JenJen There’s a phrase I heard a long time ago, I forget where, “A group is only as fast as it’s slowest member.” I think it’s rather apt. We can’t all be marathon runners. Being told to just run faster doesn’t help much, and can be downright insulting when you’re trying your best to keep up.
The year of the linux desktop is never going to happen until everyone understands this, you need to be patient, be kind and slow the fuck down sometimes in order to take everyone with you.

Hi David, sober Jen here, back to have a look at what you said to me last night. Apparently drunk me thought it was interesting enough to warrant a quote boost reminder. So let's figure out why.
A lot of people have already replied with much smarter and more eloquent takes while I was sleeping off the rum, so I'll try not to repeat all that. Instead I'll tell you why I think drunk me singled your comment out and I'll elaborate:
@JenJen@mastodon.art as you've pointed out, no one has time to learn everything. That's why we have an international economic system. I don't have a clue how to make a CPU processor. I pay for it. I don't have a clue how to speak another language, but I'm nice enough to ask others for help when I need it.
Yes you can argue that you won't be doing any of what I just said daily and electronics are more a part of modern day life, but I don't know how to fix a car anymore. I used to know. I don't have a clue how to run my work laptop with Windows. And I won't learn.
I thank you for being so open trying these new things, and know you have a community of folks to help you. I'd also say, as you saw last night, sometime this shit just doesn't work how we all expect. So even KNOWING Linux I couldn't have helped fixing those issues.
You were essentially telling me that I am not trying to learn.

@JenJen Back in the earliest days of my tech career, almost 25 years ago, I helped someone create a mandatory digital CV in a browser on a Windows PC. He had never ever used a computer in his life. I told him to double-click the blue 'e' icon on the screen, and then he proceeded to double-click links in the browser and I said "No no, just single click there." and he asked "why?" I had no explanation.
I think of this all the time.
Tech is shit. I understand why it is hard to learn.
I'm a full-time traditional artist. I sit and draw silly pics for money (some of them sexy!). I have no publisher or big company that reliably pays a wage into my account every month. I don't have sick pay or any of that.
And platforms/tech/payment processors keep throwing things at my face like: YOU WANT TO STAY HERE?
Learn HTML,CSS, Javascript.
Learn website management with Wordpress.
Learn how to read the kind of legalese that involves whether drawn circles will get you banned or not.
Learn how to set up a one woman business without also doxxing your home address (because yes, I work from home) – and no, a simple PO Box won't do. Because the payment processors you use won't allow that. Because you also have to learn what payment processors you're allowed to use. How they integrate into your studio.
Learn how to video edit in davinci resolve, learn how to livestream on two separate platforms. Learn how to do PCI COMPLIANCE. BY YOURSELF.
Learn how to post internationally with changing tarrifs and customs rules when you live in the UK.
Learn how to do all your own taxes because you're self employed with dyscalculia.
Learn how to stay focused when you have no access to adhd medication, so you're rawdogging this and needing to DIY your own scaffolds to function in the society to not be too much of a burden.
All I do is quickly pick up new skills when shit changes for me. I could've given up years ago, and maybe I should've.
But everytime something gets chucked at people like me, I get a tiny bit more petty. A tiiiny bit more made out of spite.
Like: *You don't want me here*.
You don't want me to exist on these platforms. You don't want me to make money on my own as an artist, do you?
Well fuck you, I will.
And I will learn Linux too. And I'm gonna have a shitting dog on my wallpaper, and I'll imagine that it's shitting on your lawn.
