#US forces have boarded a #Russia-flagged US sanctioned #OilTanker linked to #Venezuela in the North #Atlantic after pursuing it for weeks.

The US had been pursuing the #oil tanker since last month after it tried to evade a US “#blockade” around Venezuela.

The ship was sanctioned by the #US in 2024 for allegedly smuggling cargo for a company linked to Lebanese militant group #Hezbollah. The US #CoastGuard attempted to board it in the #Caribbean in December as it headed for #Venezuela, which the #Trump admin has placed under naval blockade [but they continue to claim it’s not a #war]. The ship refused boarding & headed across the #Atlantic.

#Russia hasn’t commented on the apparent #US operation against the Russian-flagged #OilTanker. In a statement issued on Tuesday to the state news agency #Tass, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the vessel was operating in full compliance with international #MaritimeLaw, & said it was receiving increased attention from the US & #NATO “disproportionate to its peaceful status.”

#RT, the #Russia state-owned broadcaster, published images of a helicopter approaching the Russian-flagged #OilTanker being pursued by the #USCG & said it appeared US forces were attempting to board.

#China on Wednesday said that US claims on Venezuela’s #oil were “a classic act of bullying.” Mao Ning, a spox for China’s foreign ministry, said #Venezuela has “full & permanent #sovereignty over its #NaturalResources & all #economic activities.”

The #US #military European Command posted a statement on X confirming the interception, claiming that the #DOJ, #DHS & #Defense Dept had “seized” the #OilTanker in the North #Atlantic for violations of US #sanctions.

US European Command post: The @TheJusticeDept & @DHSgov, in coordination with the @DeptofWar today announced the seizure of the M/V Bella 1 for violations of U.S. sanctions. The vessel was seized in the North Atlantic pursuant to a warrant issued by a U.S. federal court after being tracked by USCGC Munro.

#US to control #Venezuela #oil sales ‘indefinitely,’ #Energy Secretary says.

The energy secy, Chris Wright, said Wednesday that the #UnitedStates intended to maintain significant control over Venezuela’s oil industry, including by overseeing the sale of the country’s production “indefinitely.”

“Going forward we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace,” Wright said at a #GoldmanSachs energy conference near Miami.

It is not clear what “legal” authority the #Trump admin will claim to operate under. As of Wednesday morning, leaders in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, had not commented publicly on the #US’ plans.

Wright said the Trump admin was in “active dialogue” with #Venezuela leadership, as well as US #oil giants that have operated in the country.
