@rl_dane I once dropped my work thinkpad off of two flights of concrete stairs. Still worked. They're indestructible. 🔥
I know I'll be branded a heretic, but my relatively recent X390 Yoga actually has my favorite keyboard among my three #Thinkpads. It just has nice feedback and the short travel actually kinda works for me. ;)
@rl_dane @Noisecolor @Gina for me it's still my X41
@rl_dane Beautiful post! I own only one (a T480, and in addition a ThinkCentre M710Q Tiny), but it is such a great machine! I have to admit, though, that getting an X260 is quite tempting...

Thank you!
If you already have a T480, the X260 shouldn't be that tempting, unless you wanted a second, more affordable Thinkpad, in which case, go for it!! 😄
@joel
Hi there! Here is my current thinkpad's stack:
X220, X200+dock, IBM 600E, R60e, P16v 1st Gen.
Missing T450s, X230i and R61i which I gave to my family and friends.

The 600E model was my first laptop ever! I remember having used the Phoenix browser (first name of Firefox) on this machine. Those were the days...
@rl_dane can you recommend some lightweight linux distribution for 600E? 😊 I’ve tried a couple of them and Slitaz was the most spohisticated but really out-of-date… @antenagora @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn

That's rough, as you're getting towards the age of computers that the linux kernel itself doesn't much like to support (but we're not there yet).
There's TinyCore and DamnSmallLinux, but the OS that's probably best suited to a sweet old i686 is #NetBSD. ;)
@rl_dane You're right. I tested Antix, Slitaz, Q4OS, ArchLinux32, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux based on Debian 12, and Slax. I need to try Tiny Core Linux, it looks really small. Slax & Antix were cool, but I didn't know what to install to make my Neomagic graphics card work in this laptop.

I don't have a photo of my stack, but in the realm of Thinkpads and Thinkcentres I currently have:
- X240
- T495 as my main daily laptop
- E14 as my (privately owned) work laptop
- M625q as my Home Assistant box
- M720q as my Proxmox server
@rl_dane @antenagora @arek @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @thorstenzoeller ok, I do have a photo of my ThinkCenter Center

I like my ThinkCentre, although I confess I haven't used it much. ;)

Those are some classy golden girls! ;)
@rl_dane @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn 100% agreed.
I can stop collecting them at any time 🫠

holy... crap.
I've only got the one 😓

@pixx @thinkpadmuseum @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn
Actually, the MNTre reminds me of the 1997 Latitude XPiCD that I dearly miss.
Glorious chonkbook with a glorious optical trackball!

Holy moly!!!
I'd use that as the header image, but I don't want to scare people off!! /j

😅 I am in the same situation. It all started with that "better distraction free writing laptop" and now my wife says that i have too many addictions: keyboards, fountain pens and Thinkpads, I have to choose one.
@antenagora @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn
Sounds like a good set of obsessions/distractions, and you'll find plenty of friends 'round these parts that are into all three! :)
That was an enjoyable read. I had a #ThinkPad #L530 in 2013 for some school stuff. Once done, I blew away #Windows7 for #Debian. Almost* everything worked out of the box. Fast, stable, and reliable.
Had I not tripped over the power cable (and thus violently tearing apart the AC adapter plug and internal connection, I'd still have it.
I've seriously considered going for another ThinkPad but I have a handful of spare laptops at my disposal and my daily driver is a sweet #Dell #Latitude 5400 (also running Debian).
The only thing that didn't work was the red dot in the keyboard. Oddly, it was supported under #openSUSE.
If you want a recommendation, the x260 is dirt cheap right now, and it takes to #BSD quite well. XD
(Just be smarter than me, and avoid the TN panels. They're... not nearly as bad as old STN screens, but not great)
You're back!!!!
this will be a treasured read tomorrow instead of a haphazard read at 2:30am

I fear that a decade from now, even used #Thinkpads will be junk, but for now, they're still pretty nice, especially the 5-year-oldish models. :D
Thinkpads are hardware peak perfection
