Hey @clayton,

Re: https://claytonerrington.com/blog/2026-w03/,

Are you still thinking about getting a #3DPrinter? What brands are looking good to you? I've got some recommendations and contra-recommendations. I'm a big fan of #Prusa because of their (mostly?) #OpenSource stance on things, although I've been decently happy with my #SOVOL printer, which was both inexpensive, and also mostly open.

I'd recommend staying away from #BambuLabs, as they're trying to become the #Apple of #3DPrinting, and I absolutely mean that as an insult. XD

Re: Laptops really being "portable computers," I recall [referring to] the Classic all-in-on Macs as laptops, so I guess that should work both ways! ;)

@rl_dane @clayton my sentiments exactly, Prusa great, Sovol good, Bambu less good (but they upped everyone's game) and "being like Apple" is not a compliment. My fourth most recent laptop was Apple, now it's running Ubuntu and controlling two 3D printers via Repetier Server software.

@donbarthel @clayton

Yeah, it's good to have someone like Bambu nipping at Prusa's heels, but they're way past nipping, now.

Also, they're driving Prusa away from Open Source, which is a huge bummer. :'(

@rl_dane @clayton I’ve had a Prusa MK3 since it came out in 2017 and have loved it and never looked back (I started out with the biggest fire hazard of printers, the Anet A8 which is a whole other nightmare story).

The only problems I’ve had with it over the years are super minor repairs - for example thermistor failures (which I’ve got one right now I need to fix) because that part has thin wires that break after so much time and movement.

It isn’t as plug and play as the Bambu ones seem to be, but it’s pretty close.

@rl_dane I haven’t made any real decisions yet. Only glancing at brands now. A friend at work has a Bambu Labs and another has a Flash Forge printer. Costs and where it’s going to live at home is a big deciding factor too.

There’s just so much we can print and have fun with. The world is endless now!

@rl_dane It's all shiny now, and the rabbit hole keeps going. I keep finding things to make, but don't have a printer yet. I do think I'll get my money's worth either way. I need to do more research into the printers now than just what to print, but that is easier said than done.

@clayton

If you're the youtube research hyperfocus type, I can highly recommend Maker's Muse. He puts out a lot of really quality stuff on YT.
