Was thinking last week that there have to be quilts honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, right? So I went looking online and ended up curating this thread for #MLKDay - enjoy!

Quilt featuring full body images of Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and John Lewis walking with linked arms, digitally printed on fabric. The three men are superimposed over the US flag, and the red stripes of the flag are interwoven around their bodies. The lower third of the quilt is made up of cream and sepia log cabin blocks. The piece is machine quilted with an allover stipple stitch; the color of the thread both complements and contrasts in different areas.

Narrative quilt featuring a stylized central image of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr appliquéd over various of his quotes handwritten on white fabric. The King figure appears to be wearing an actual blue plaid blazer, which has been sewn to the piece; the quilt is further embellished with a small American flag, a metal sign that reads “Colored Served in Rear” and a world map showing routes for ships involved in the transatlantic slave trade. Names of others involved in the Civil Rights movement are stitched on red along the left side and at the bottom. The quilt has a wide outside border of black and white decorative hand fabric and solid red binding.

Traditional African strip quilt made from rich silk fabrics, primarily purples, lavenders and yellow. Images of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr as well as excerpts from his Letter from a Birmingham jail and African symbols have been photo transferred onto sections the vivid quilt which is further embellished with beads, paint, lace and ribbons. In the lower left corner of the quilt is a pocket containing three mini quilts with images from Jet magazine’s memorial issue after King’s assassination; meant to be interactive, the mini quilts are an invitation to further discuss what the quilt means.

Portrait quilt of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. staring slightly to the left of the viewer. His face is sewn from multi-colored 2” squares, though his hair, eyes, suit and tie appear more realistically. The background consists of a black and white fabric that features printed words of encouragement. To the left and right of the central image are simple black strips that form triangles as a frame, while above and below are black and white sawtooth stars.

Black and white painting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. superimposed on a vintage-looking quilt. The painting is by artist Sola Sawyerr, while the quilt was made by Mac McNamara. The quilt is made in the style of 1930s quilts, with several of the background panels possibly upcycled from feedsacks featuring images of ivy, kitchen canisters and promotional information. Near the bottom is a row of pieced basket quilt blocks, each sewn from a different pastel color and rotated so none touching face the same direction.

Realistic portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr mosaic pieced from over 400 scraps of fabric on a light green batik background, with several brown borders. Artist statement: “All of the colors in his face represent all of us in the world — from almost white, to grayish and reddish tones, to deep dark browns.” The quilt is finished with three borders, a small white inner border, medium mahogany border and wider chestnut border.

This quilt features an optical illusion where images of either Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. appear depending on the direction in which the viewer is looking. To see King, one must be standing towards the right. This central image is bordered repeatedly in primarily gold and black African fabrics giving the impression of a rich, wide, carved gold frame. The most prominent borders include one with gold flying geese, one embellished with small cowrie shells and one with red and green representations of the African continent.
