#QuestionOfTheDay who is a character that ruined a work of fiction you were otherwise enjoying and why?

bonus points if you actually stopped watching/playing/reading etc because of this character, so not just like an annoying character you hate but you still kept going

@ami_angelwings Lucoa in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Once *that* can of worms opened I stopped watching, which was a shame because i was really enjoying it up to that point.

See also the child with the ridiculously sexualized crush on Kanna. Cut all that shit out and give me more of the Fafnir nerd bromance or something. Just...not whatever that escalated into.

@ami_angelwings Wesley Crusher destroyed Star Trek, the entire thing, for me. I was a big fan of TOS and when TNG was announced I was looking forward to it.

A few episodes later I'd had enough, and a major part of that was Wesley Crusher. I pretty much stopped watching all Star Trek shows after that.

Not directly relevant, but Wil Wheaton is nothing like the character of Wesley and is a very cool guy. He’s a writer and show host now, mostly. He was going through it while on the show.

His blog is here, in case you want to overwrite your past annoyance: https://wilwheaton.net/ 🙂

@Carolee @zdl I actually like Wesley Crusher, but I don't begrudge people who don't

Neither does Wil Wheaton. A friend was at Worldcon and he showed up in the audience at a panel bashing the hell out of the character and he stood up and agreed that the way he was written was annoying.

That was before the character's post-departure episodes that toned down the "boy genius who saves the day" persona.

@Nezchan @ami_angelwings @Carolee I'd heard they'd toned that down in later seasons, but by then it was too late. First season of TNG soured me on the franchise entirely. (Not *just* because of Wesley Crusher either. He was just a major component among many other problems.)

That's a pity since while the first season was pretty ass (so was the second, mostly), after that it got very good indeed. The later seasons have a great many excellent episodes, and in fact one of those outstanding episodes was about Wesley, showing that he, too, is capable of fucking up pretty badly.
