Would you like to create posts longer than 500 characters on Mastodon?
You can have longer posts by moving your account to a server that offers longer posts. I've done a list of well-run reliable servers with larger post sizes at:

@FediGarden @FediTips It's one of the reasons i run my own instance. i may have overdone the limit though... ;)
@FediGarden one day I'll have time to like, look into the whole relay thing BC there's defs a lack of options for small servers w closed regs to link up w/o follow quests.

The update to Mastodon 4.5.0 really helped smaller servers a lot as they now fetch entire conversations, even if your server hasn't noticed any of the accounts or replies before.
@FediGarden oh so thats how people make those annoying posts you have to scroll three times to get past.
@FediGarden Current instance I'm on has 1,312 characters. kolektiva.social has 2,000 iirc. If I had a list like this when I decided to jump ship from mas.to I probably wouldn't have considered ditching Mastodon. 500 characters sounds great when you're used to the chaos of Twitter and Bluesky, but some of us don't like having to burst through explanations in the hope people won't get through part 2 of 5 and have already drawn incorrect conclusions.
social.vivaldi.net could also be a candidate for this list - they maintain a 1337 character limit on their server.
p.s. I've recently added many more servers to the "longer posts" list, so if you've checked it previously it might be worth checking it again.

One possibly simpler solution is to try asking your instance admin nicely if they wouldn't mind upping the limit. That worked for me on mastodonapp.uk, because @wild1145 is a total star 🙂
It's slightly tricky as there's no official way of altering the character limit on standard Mastodon, admins have to manually edit several files and then possibly change them again for every update.
For whatever reason the Mastodon developers haven't included this in the options that admins can set within the official interface. Hopefully that changes in the future.
But yes, some admins are great and will make this change anyway! 👍
