If you see a post with numbers at the bottom like any of these:

3
6/
1/4
2/8
7/?
🧵 5/9

...it means the post is part of a larger thread. You can view the full thread by clicking on the post, then scrolling up or down.

If someone can't fit everything they want to say in one post, they will create a thread by replying to themselves. The numbers indicate which part of the thread that post is.

@kaveinthran

There was, but there was concern about privacy and the ability of people to delete their posts remaining copied on the thread viewer.

p.s. If you're wanting to avoid having to make threads, you might want to check out this list of well-run reliable servers that allow posts to be longer than 500 characters: https://fedi.garden/tag/larger-post-size

If you're considering moving your account to another server, there's a step-by-step guide at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server

@FediTips My #Mastodon server uses the official #Docker image, then automatically creates a new image with the post character limit increased to 3,000 and runs that image. Anytime I upgrade, the automation runs and produces the patched image. If it can’t patch, it lets me know so I can adjust the patch file.

Sure would be nice if @MastodonEngineering would just make this configurable.

I agree, and many others agree. This is why the Github page is still open about this. Many hate the fact people want to actually increase the character limit because then "THIS WOULDN'T BE MICROBLOGGING!" yawn. I don't get the love for short texts and or short content. Then again, I am the kinda person that will watch a 7 hour video essay. 😊 @mjg @FediTips @MastodonEngineering

@FediTips also, if the thread's posts contain content warning, it can be practical, to put the numbering to the content warning for better visibility

@sam @vega

As Sam says, there's no official way for admins to change character limits on standard Mastodon. Those that do it have to edit several files and then re-do the edits every time they update the server software.
