Online platforms have always held all the cards.

The DSA is changing that. One clear set of rules to protect people across the EU.

🔸 It’s about choice. The DSA requires the biggest platforms to offer a feed that isn't based on your personal data.
🔸 It’s about safety. What’s illegal offline should be illegal online.
🔸 It’s about freedom. In Europe, you have the right to challenge content moderation decisions taken by platforms.

An internet that works for people.

@EUCommission All of this sounds good, so why won't the upcoming EUDI app work on my European phone running a European developed degoogled OS? Instead I will be required to but a new device with Google (or possibly Apple) services just to use the app, which is frankly unacceptable. I'm sure you see why this undermines everything the EU is trying to build in terms of digital sovereignity.

@EUCommission All this sounds good but until true action is taken to protect privacy (totally abolishing the possibility of chat control-even if renamed with a new euphemism, kneecapping big US tech firms and publicly funding their replacements with open source alternatives) this comes across as just PR and deception.

@EUCommission Please, push for big companies to always use open protocols for client-facing applications. I'd like to be able to log into my bank using a FOSS MFA app instead of a proprietary one

@EUCommission what you need to do is classify chronological feed only with your followers posts as social network, and anything with data based feed, or includes non follower posts as content platforms, then you create different legislation for each, been the second more restrictive

Great idea, but then the EU should also ignore the lobbyists, kick out the corrupt people, drop data retention, show some backbone and stop always bowing down to the tech billionaires!
Then it might work.

@EUCommission

I am not an expert on this topic, but it appears that the EU commission is not really doing anything about malfeasance by the US monopolies. Justice delayed is justice denied. The fines are less than their profits. X booted you from advertising, you should have responded by banning them in Europe. You appear feckless.

I am very glad that at least you have a presence on the Fediverse. I hope this feedback does not scare you away.

@EUCommission #funfact : What has been illegal offline has always been illegal online, there is nothing the #dsa changes 😉 It has always been about the competencies/expertise/willingness of the authorities to do their job, and this is not different with the DSA 😊 when the police or whoever does not enforce the laws, then the laws are just a paper tiger and red tape.

Hello @mk!
True, what is illegal offline is also illegal online.
The #DSA has made it easier to enforce our laws, and prosecute illegal activities online.
For example, by making it easier for users to report illegal content, and by obliging companies to be transparent about moderation decisions. The #DSA also obliges online marketplaces verify the identities of sellers, and ensure traceability.

@EUCommission

A good start.

However, companies and leaders who violate these rules must face criminal charges. Fines are nothing more than just another cost of doing business for them, and won't actually change their behavior.

Especially managers, board and shareholders.

Fining a Company/Corporation is passed on to customers. Not a big deterrent.

@EUCommission Honestly, I don't hold my breath that big tech platforms (meta, X, YouTube, etc) are suddently going to start to behave in a decent way. They are primarily after profit, driven by greed, an that amount of AI slop that one can see there shows it. Not to mention their ties to authoritarian regimes. The best option is to show them the door, and fully embrace the alternative (the Fediverse).

It’s a good thing we are already doing it. 😊 Last year we launched a call for proposals titled “Fediversity”. More info here: https://link.europa.eu/M9rCH3
Our colleagues @EC_NGI regularly post about opportunities like this, you can follow them to receive them directly in your Fedi feed.
