Can anyone recommend any non-video tutorials that would be a good introduction to #Blender ?

Preferably something that walks the user through making a simple object or two. (rather than just going straight to the manual and trying to find relevant starting stuff)

#Blender3d

@jerp I know you said non-video, but if you are at all ok with video (blender ui itself is by nature video friendly, it's hard to describe many of the ui elements without using video) - I highly recommend the BlenderGuru donut tutorials - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tbSCMbJA6o - if you are vision impaired, just play the video and listening to his audio without watching it is good enough to learn what he's trying to tell.

@jlin that's actually the one I was most hoping to avoid

@jerp there are others you can try! I find that looking at his approach is more interesting than the actual actions - like how he thinks about what objects look like - he mentioned that people imagine what they think an object looks like, but it's very different from what it's actually like: it reminded me of the story of "draw a bicycle from memory" - and most people's bikes will not be bikes. He mentioned that idea and tries to show modeling from his perspective, which is helpful.

@jlin I think I'm going to have to concede that adhd (and _probably_ undiagnosed autism) is going to make that really, really hard. I just need some simple notes to get my foot in the door so I can disappear for a while and come out having figured out the rest of what I want to learn.

@jerp sorry just one more note: it's often not known, but there are 2 main approaches to 3d: the "blender way" which is taking a basic shape (like a cube or a sphere or a cylinder) and then molding it to look like something, or the "parametric way" : which is by defining geometry - defining how many sides an object needs to be, what degree each angle is, etc, and letting the computer construct it from rules.

the blender/maya way I find is really wishywashy so I personally don't like it.

@jerp personally, I started 3d by learning solidworks/fusion360/freeCAD, which is the "define all your angles, and you have a real shape". Most often, the parametric way works better for people who like their angles to actually be angles of a particular defined degree. Usually for making objects, parametric is way better than direct modeling your milage may vary. Have fun!

@jerp I'd say 3d is the perfect place - you can make your objects whatever you want them to be! the basics would include knowing how to move around in the viewport/3d space, what the basic shapes are, and what the "camera" does - there are lots of tutorials out there, I'm sure you'll find something.

@jlin yeah I've worked with 3d studio max a bit something like 10-15 years ago (models for C&C Red Alert 2 modding, user maps for Renegade, and a couple of other things), I just want a fresh introduction to the basics of Blender in some simple structured way that doesn't involve being stuck at someone else's pace and not having to deal with the potential of hating someone's voice or presentation style.
