Looking over the numbers the majority of the 600,000 migrants to Alberta in the last five years that Danielle Smith complained about are not immigrants, they are interprovincial migrants. For immigrants to Canada Alberta receives an amount comparable to our population which would be around 250k over those five years.

It is fair to note that some of those interprovincial migrants are immigrants to Canada who landed in other provinces and then later moved to Alberta. However, as even Jason Kenney points out, Canada has freedom of mobility and no constitutional amendment will change that.

@Chigaze

It was Jason Kenney’s “Alberta is Calling” campaign in 2022 that prompted the significant interprovincial migration but he’s been written out of the UCP’s history so it’s conveniently forgotten.

@Sanderde
My partner and I were talking about this last night.

Alberta’s provincial government ran promotional campaigns to convince Canadian citizens and permanent residents to move to Alberta not 5 years ago.

Now the current government has *buyers regret* and doesn’t think it should be responsible for providing services to the people it actively recruited?

@AlsoPaisleyCat @Sanderde Pretty much. That program ran through 2024 when Smith was complaining to the federal government that Alberta needed more people. :eyeroll:

@Chigaze @AlsoPaisleyCat

And not just “people” but immigrants and temporary workers as Alison Creekside has shown.

@Chigaze

Where do you see those numbers? That seems like an important context.

@ElwoodCity There are number of places you can find the numbers. I looked at the ones reported on Statista.

Number of immigrants arriving in Canada in 2024, by province or territory of residence:

Annual number of immigrants arriving in Canada from July 2000 to June 2025:

Canada’s appeal as an immigration destination has been increasing over the past two decades, with some 435,500 people immigrating to the country in 2025.
