How to pick up a snail to help him or her...
@IngridHbn Thank you for sharing this! I have pet giant African landsnails and the way I explain it is the shell is hard, like your fingernails, but it would hurt if someone picked you up by your fingernails too because they're connected to delicate tissue. I'd also add that sometimes touching the shell isn't enough - some of my snails are more cautious than others and retract immediately, whereas with some of the more bold ones you have to (gently!) tap repeatedly. Also they're less likely to go back in if they're eating something they like. It really does show that even creatures as simple as snails have distinct personalities and preferences
@afewbugs this is ai slop.
@csgraves @nev pointed that out downthread. The advice is still correct though so i redrew it https://social.coop/@afewbugs/116131701361234718
@afewbugs apparently this snail infographic is AI slop :(
Hafta say, if it is, the state of the art has improved significantly. What are the LLM tells?
@artcollisions @afewbugs Corroboration: https://www.google.com/search/about-this-image?img=H4sIAAAAAAAA_wEXAOj_ChUI7qbwjsLF6rN3EMP5rbWr36XmjQHVbgZ_FwAAAA%3D%3D&q=https://www.facebook.com/groups/allcreatures1/posts/3203453276628751/&ctx=iv&hl=en-CA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjM8uLr1fSSAxV7GjQIHdo0OVwQg4ILegUIrAIQDg
I *knew* I should have looked up the source on this one! But I was lazy. *facepalm*
@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev it may be AI but it's still good advice so I redrew it.
@normjess @IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev congratulations, you win the internet for today
@afewbugs @IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev This is a beautiful drawing, thanks for making it!
@afewbugs Question: in the third frame, what's the grey stuff below the shell? Is it supposed to be leftover slime on the ground, or do they retract their head and leave some of their body outside? (It's been a long time since I saw a big snail, and I can't remember what they do. For little snails, I seem to recall that they sometimes fall over after they retract their body.)
@amenonsen It's meant to be slime splashing out as they retract quickly. I'm not much of an artist, sorry!
@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev what I have learned from this is that I'm considerably better at drawing cartoon snails than I am at drawing human hands
@IngridHbn It's not he or her, snails are hermophrodites. They are male and female at the same time!
@troler yes someone told me already. I had forgotten.
@IngridHbn
As a biologist, I call bullshit. The anatomy is correct, but I've never seen a snail getting injured by lifting it off the ground. It's not like a suction pad. The only place where it *might* happen is a very smooth, artificial surface, like a window. But there, you'll feel the resistance, and won't rip it off. Also, usually they retreat quite fast when in danger, you don't need half a minute for that.
@kupac @IngridHbn I'm skeptical of this as well. I've never seen a "torn mantle" on a snail, and I'm a biologist too.
@IngridHbn I kinda knew this, and great to get it confirmed
@webhat @IngridHbn@mastodon.online apparently this is AI slop and not even correct.

@ninafelwitch thanks for letting me know
