How to pick up a snail to help him or her...

#snails #snail #help #animals #animalsave

How not to do it:
Grabbing shell and yanking off surface (with illustration of a snail being picked up by a hand.
Right way on the right:
Touch shell gently
Wait for snail to retract
Lift slowly once released
Place in direction it was heading

@IngridHbn Thank you for sharing this! I have pet giant African landsnails and the way I explain it is the shell is hard, like your fingernails, but it would hurt if someone picked you up by your fingernails too because they're connected to delicate tissue. I'd also add that sometimes touching the shell isn't enough - some of my snails are more cautious than others and retract immediately, whereas with some of the more bold ones you have to (gently!) tap repeatedly. Also they're less likely to go back in if they're eating something they like. It really does show that even creatures as simple as snails have distinct personalities and preferences

@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev it may be AI but it's still good advice so I redrew it.

Infographic on how to pick up snails. The first picture is captioned "Picking snails up by the shell can hurt them. Delicate tissue can be torn when they're stuck fast to the surface." There is a picture with a red X through it of a snail with an alarmed cartoon expression being picked up by the shell. There are red pain points on the foot and mantle where things are being pulled apart. The next picture is captioned "instead gently tap the shell till they retract" A snail with an annoyed expression is being tapped on the shell with a finger. The final picture is of a snail that has retreated into their shell with a thought cloud saying "fuck off!" captioned "Now you can pick them up"

@afewbugs Question: in the third frame, what's the grey stuff below the shell? Is it supposed to be leftover slime on the ground, or do they retract their head and leave some of their body outside? (It's been a long time since I saw a big snail, and I can't remember what they do. For little snails, I seem to recall that they sometimes fall over after they retract their body.)

@amenonsen It's meant to be slime splashing out as they retract quickly. I'm not much of an artist, sorry!

@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev what I have learned from this is that I'm considerably better at drawing cartoon snails than I am at drawing human hands

As a biologist, I call bullshit. The anatomy is correct, but I've never seen a snail getting injured by lifting it off the ground. It's not like a suction pad. The only place where it *might* happen is a very smooth, artificial surface, like a window. But there, you'll feel the resistance, and won't rip it off. Also, usually they retreat quite fast when in danger, you don't need half a minute for that.

@kupac @IngridHbn I'm skeptical of this as well. I've never seen a "torn mantle" on a snail, and I'm a biologist too.
