I'm a little confused.
I just listened to the podcast you posted, and I did not hear a single argument against Mastodon other then "Its not the place that Nazis took over and that place has all of the tech people we want to have pay attention to us."
What I did hear was...
1. They did no research into cost.
2. They had no interest in moderation.
3. It wasn't giving them enough attention.
4. The people who they want the attention of are on a Nazi run platform, so Mastodon was just a joke to them.
5. Bots invaded. See #2.
So instead of Russian propaganda, they were more willing to use a known fascist service because that's where people paid attention to them.
And yes, I understand that they are public figures and need to be seen and heard to make a living.
It's just their reasoning that boggles my mind.
They misused a service and made poor choices. Where does the "We have more work to do" part come in because other then increasing security against bots, (which is always changing) it sounds like their problem was that they realized they didn't care when they realized that they couldn't get more attention out of it.
