@shom test reply to see if the bug happens 🙈
@paige ooh I want to know about that! Will the event be streamed/recorded for those of us who sadly find ourselves far away from Montreal?
@matt@writing.exchange @res260@infosec.exchange @Floppy@mastodon.me.uk @paige@masto.canadiancivil.com I live in Raleigh NC. I can't make it. But I too hope there's a live stream or recording. Preferably on Peertube. :-). Can we get more info in general really? Is this a new project! I must know more! 😄
@amca Remember, my major was electrical engineering!
A field effect transistor works very simply, by using an electrical field to open or close a path. There is nothing hard to understand about that.
A bipolar junction transistor (which is a less common sort nowadays), I forget exactly what is going on in that. But it is similar.
What the ‘quantum’ stuff involves is that there are a lot of EMPIRICAL LAWS that are called ‘quantum’. They are like Boyle’s Law before invention of the Ideal Gas.
@chemoelectric Sorry, I don't think you answered my question. I can't see where you say in (the wrong as you see it) quantum mechanical model of a transistor entanglement is involved?
@nomdeb and the seller, I assume, is not in the US.
So this unexpected fee is the result of Trump's tariffs and the end of the de minimus exemption.
It sucks! And it has made a lot of things much much more expensive. And, in most cases at least, has been a nightmare for sellers and for buyers.
I got hit with a DHL bill for 2x the price of an item I purchased, several weeks after receiving the item in the name of tariffs.
A8. Here's my bike earlier in the week at the end of the line. I was riding up a dry stream bed and reached this dry waterfall, no navigable way through or over. So this was the turnaround point. Still, a beautiful ride.
@wanderinghermit @ascentale @bikenite that's a seriously cool looking bike. I like how the rear carrier is attached
@Binder Ian Fleming wakes up, suddenly alert.
This is a rather good explainer about China’s manufacturing layout, and why certain industries seem to cluster around specific cities.
I think many US cities were shaped like this: Detroit, Pittsburgh, Seattle etc. and largely for the same reason, and I think a lot of them still are. But none of them are at the widespread scale that we find in China any more. And this is yet another reason why it’s exceedingly difficult to replicate China’s manufacturing capacity in the US today. It’s not just money; it’s millions of people arranging their lives around manufacturing.
A pooper scoop of tech Bros are in the process of emptying America's bowels of a hundred billion dollars for AI.
A hundred moon missions of money to convince the world to use Rice Crispies to build the future.
A Biblical waste of money, water, lives, resources and intelligence.
At some point, at any point, america could build wealth instead, build demand.

Attention #Fediverse save the date!
On February 24th, 2026 in #Montreal we're putting on a fediverse event.
- A morning of technical talks
- An accessible afternoon to bring-a-friend
- An evening to socialize.
For my bit, I'll be doing a talk on how content creators can build their own self-hosted #Patreon with FOSS tools!
And our last question of the week:
Q8. Do you have a year-end photo to share? As usual, cycling-related or not is fine. Tell us about it!
#BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite
@ascentale @bikenite A8: always love this - remembered to take one actually - i've been enjoying the fall leaves here in San Francisco and after the wind and rain they were all over the bike lanes (as well as some tree branches). I did like the colors though as I rode down the bike lane on Valencia! #BikeNite

Hey fediverse #nonprofit people,
I've got a project (missionlibre.org), which is meant to bring kids aged 11-14 into #freesoftware. No part of it has been easy -- not practically, not personally.
I think Mission:Libre is wonderful, but it's an odd little project in a complicated situation. I could really use an ear and some practical advice from someone with experience. Are you able to help me?
I'm in #newzealand and there's no local help for me.

Can you name three songs that you love?
1. One song that is well known and loved by millions and yes you love it too.
2. One song tragically little known that many could easily love but, for now, loved only by you.
3. And at last one song that you know is hard to love:
(too strange or corney to share) but deep in your heart, that song lives there. Like a worm it lives there.
eg
1. popular
2. should be popular
3. shouldn’t be popular but got damn it you still like it’
I could do this a few times but I will settle for this as an opening salvo.
1) Kashmir - Led Zepplin
2) Long Way Home - Moreland & Arbuckle
3) But You Don't Care - Mi-Sex
@ascentale @bikenite I lost a pair of pants thanks to a snag on the bike seat. No repairs were possible, but thankfully there were nearby clothing stores.
made this cargo container ages ago, first time I’ve actually used it
(and from the raindrops you can maybe see, it was the right call)
mostly because it had a terrible rattle I only figured out last summer lol, and I hated the noise
nice and quiet now
@ascentale @bikenite A8: I do! I made a rain-tight cargo pod a while ago but it was super rattily so I never used it. This past summer I figured it out (finally - I was approaching it all wrong) and I finally used it for the first time today. Worked a treat, too. Glad I finally have it in amongst my options for real!

@genex @ascentale @cpm @bikenite Flashing was the only way to go back when we used C cells to power incandescent bulbs, but these days we have LEDs and LiPo batteries that can just run forever! I have my lights powered by a dynamo in the front hub, so I never even think about them: if I'm moving, they're on!
@nelson thanks!
1. Probably will put it in main nav once finalized. Though would make Catch-up more sparkly first than this? 🙈
2. You're right, media view would be really useful 🤔
