How AI Impacts Skill Formation

AI assistance produces significant productivity gains across professional domains, particularly for novice workers. Yet how this assistance affects the development of skills required to effectively supervise AI remains unclear. Novice workers who rely heavily on AI to complete unfamiliar tasks may compromise their own skill acquisition in the process. We conduct randomized experiments to study how developers gained mastery of a new asynchronous programming library with and without the assistance of AI. We find that AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average. Participants who fully delegated coding tasks showed some productivity improvements, but at the cost of learning the library. We identify six distinct AI interaction patterns, three of which involve cognitive engagement and preserve learning outcomes even when participants receive AI assistance. Our findings suggest that AI-enhanced productivity is not a shortcut to competence and AI assistance should be carefully adopted into workflows to preserve skill formation -- particularly in safety-critical domains.

Incorporating structural plasticity in neural network models

In standard spiking neural networks (SNN), synaptic connections between neurons are typically fixed or change only according to specific plasticity rules, such as Hebbian learning or Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP). However, the brain’s connectivity is not static. Neurons can grow and retract synapses in response to activity levels and environmental conditions. A phenomenon known as structural plasticity. This process plays a crucial role in learning and memory formation in the brain. To illustrate how structural plasticity can be modeled in spiking neural networks, in this post, we will use the NEST Simulator and replicate the tutorial on ‘Structural Plasticity.

I'm finding this site to be a decent reading guide for #learning basic #Golang topics.

If I remember correctly, I first came across this website several years ago and the roadmaps were just block diagram pdfs.

Now, under each topic block are ~1-3 links to other relevant articles on the topic. It also keeps track of section completion & overall progress.

So far, it's been a mix of official Go documentation, Go dev's blog articles along with various third party blog posts. Some of it is a bit repetitive; but, I'm finding the examples useful for re-enforcing basic concepts. YMMV

Not sure I'm ready to try to articulate how much this person enriches my thinking in one way or another but it's kind of like opening a window and feeling a summer breeze on my face. The courage of thinking and grappling with problems in public is a big part of the appeal.

I learned how to remove links from metal watchbands today.

I also learned that it can be fairly painful if you're using pressure and you push the pin through the band, and part of your finger is on the other side to receive the pin. Turns out, skin doesn't muster as much resistive force as it takes to get the pin out of the link.

I might have to put a link back in come summer. We'll see.
