Up late because I had to rebuild my zfs pool on my main workstation. I intended to start the replication and go to sleep, but that didn't happen.

Things seem much better right now, but time will tell.

Special thanks to @jimsalter for keying me in to my Samsung EVO drives lying about their block size and likely the cause of my crap #ZFS performance of my home directory since 2017... I probably should have asked him earlier 🤦

Nothing has happened in my #homelab recently, so I decided to make some problems myself.
After some time using #TrueNAS on my custom-built server, I decided I don't want it anymore. It is nice, but feels like an unfinished product. You have Apps and data backups, but no simple way to backup apps configuration. You have LXC, but no snapshots for them...

I'm going to migrate it to #Proxmox. Trying to move one of #zfs pools without losing data. Wish me luck.

Oh right! I keep an offline-backup of my entire game collection of gog.com games, that I bought 😅

But I really should exclude them from my backup jobs 😆

We take data-safety of our Mastodon user data serious and have implemented multiple levels of backups with rigorous bi-yearly restore tests and documentation.

We do:
- Periodic local file-system snapshots (Every 15 minutes).

- Filesystem replication to backup-server in Germany (Hetzner, Falkenstein).

- Filesystem replication to second backup-server in Switzerland (Equinix ZH4, Zürich).

- GPG Encrypted application-layer backup (PostgreSQL, Mastodon configuration) to server from @tux in Germany.

Every single one of those backup-layers is monitored and tested (real recover) bi-yearly at least.

Our infrastructure runs on FreeBSD/ZFS with one backup-layer using "zfs send/recv" plus an additional application-layer backup that's using pg_dump+gpg. Just to be on the safe side.

All backup-jobs are monitored and the status (success/fail) is transperently visible on https://status.burningboard.net/
