Can any instance operators offer an explanation as to why federating with Mastodon from an instance not running their software tends to be more difficult?
I've noticed lately that when viewing a profile from a Mastodon instance, their post history tends to be incomplete or otherwise missing. Any posts that are made recently tend to have a significant delay or don't show up on their profile at all.
I know that you can view the content from the remote instance in question for a complete profile, that you need to do so however does seem to be a failing on the part of the server software to properly federate and populate posts.

We are excited to share that we are beginning work on a new onboarding experiment for #Mastodon: Default Server Recommendations.
Our intent for this experiment is to recommend the closest server geographically that is in the correct language during the sign-up flow. We will be running this experiment on our iOS and Android apps only to start.

Quoting this good thread from Mastodon official that they're "work on a new onboarding experiment for #Mastodon: Default Server Recommendations" which will recommend closest geographic server in the correct language that:
1. Run default Mastodon (with a "for now" codicil)
2. Agree to the Mastodon Server Covenant ( https://joinmastodon.org/covenant )
3. Have been around at least a year and have both shutdown and disaster plans
There are more details in the thread and particularly in the replies - e.g., why it'll be rolling out to mobile clients first, while web will take longer. There are good reasons for it.
I like it on first read. Seems like good stuff.

Something I believe may be warrant discussion is how each instance is beholden to the rules of another by virtue of federation. Something that has given way to vibes-based reporting which our administrator has been unable to act on.
This has, unfortunately, resulted in the slander of our instance. Branded as allegedly being "anti-moderation" and "bigoted" for choosing not to punish their users over frivolous reports or engage in the fediblock of the more fringe or controversial instances on here ourselves.
So Fedizens, what are your thoughts?

You really ought to write a blog post on epistemic heuristics and the impact that it has on moderating communities @xaetacore. I've known for a while what it was through observing cause and effect, but never really knew the proper terminology for it until recently. A lot of interactions suddenly made a whole lot of sense afterward in retrospect.
