@nekoow7 This is what works for me; others have argued with it, hence the disclaimer.

1) if nasal congestion is involved, don't snuffle it back into your nose. Blow it out as much as you can. Same with anything that you cough up. Don't let it stay in your system.

2) If it's a dry cough, the tea and honey bit will help. If it's a productive cough (bringing up stuff from your lungs) you want to promote that, even if it's uncomfortable. A steamy shower usually works for me, but boiling water and breathing the steam there works too.

Appropriate medicines are your best bet to relieve symptoms, over the counter or prescribed.

Whatever crap your body is trying to get rid of, get rid of it.

Any cold or flu that I've gotten since that realization has passed much faster when I'm not snuffling the gross down my throat. Bedtime is usually the worst for this (for me) because your body will do what's easy to let you sleep.

Hope some of that can help.

@nekoow7 for really persistent tough coughs you need to get something with Dextromethorphan in it. It's the active ingredient of cough syrup. Here in the US the main brand name is Robitussin and it comes as gel capsules or as a syrup.

You have to take it consistently every 4-6 hours and avoid talking as much as you can. You'll probably need to take it for at least a week.

I'm prone to getting severe coughs that won't go away. Dextromethorphan is the only thing that works reliably for me. Everything else I've tried is too weak.

You'll also still want to do things like drinking tea and whatever non drug remedies people suggest because they'll help the healing process, but you have to control the cough first.

@sysop408 Thanks for the info. im not familiar with Dextromethorpan but I know Robitussin. I "used" to have asthma but it rarely gets triggered.. it's just the chest pains its what makes the Suffering

@nekoow7 yup, get the maximum strength cough suppressant version of Robitussin or a generic version of it. Again, the thing you're actually looking for is Dextromethorphan.

Yeah, I have asthma sometimes too. That really doesn't help with the coughing. Coughing triggers the asthma and the asthma triggers more coughing.

Whenever I have even a mild cough, I hit it hard to prevent it from becoming a persistent problem. Otherwise, it takes forever to get rid of.
