Q7. Does your face get irritated from your helmet straps? Do you know of any good solutions?

@ascentale @bikenite a7. Not that I recall. I do prefer the faux leather straps on the Kask brand helmet I have vs whatever regular straps are made of (nylon?), in terms of feel against my skin and they also stay adjusted better. #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A7. Although I always wear a helmet and have since my tweens, it’s never been a problem for me. However, I hope some of the suggestions some here have offered are helpful to the questioner. #BikeNite

A7:
I had this issue long time ago when bit of it broke and I didn't noticed (or didn't care because it wasn't that important), wondered for a while and then solved it by tying the straps with string where the not important strap broke.

Other than that no, but as others suggested already - good fitting helmet can solve this. Usually you don't tighten the straps completely, gap for 2 fingers beneath your chin and the strap (at least I was told).

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A7. Yes, my face gets irritated by everything, I have the most dramatic skin ever to skin. I don't have a solution but I have tips:

  • Adjust your helmet straps for a good fit, and readjust as necessary. You want it stuck against your face, not loose and rubbing all over.
  • Look for strap material and hardware that doesn't irritate your skin more than necessary. You can place something between the straps and your skin if you are unlucky in this regard with a helmet you already have, or switch out the straps.
  • Wash the washable parts from time to time!

@ascentale @bikenite never - thank the FSM.

On road-racing or MTB helmets the strap should be fairly loose. The helmet should stay in place for all non-crash activities because of the fit around the head. I can, without unstrapping, pull through my jackets integrated neck gaiter and my buff if I need to regulate temperature

Some brands just fit one's head better than others; for me it's Giro, Poc, or Bontrager for a nice fit - the other brands I have tried just are not right for my bonce

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @bikenite the strap should be as the helmet manual says. If you are going to use the accursed thing, then at least follow the maker's instructions and get the maximum benefit for the harm they do.

@mjr @ascentale @bikenite I did. The instructions are clear . The last set I read phrased it as being able to easily eat, drink, and swallow without discomfort. That's more than enough slack in a helmet which fits for it to be as I described in previous post - and to avoid any form of chaffing.

@ascentale @bikenite A7 it used to, but my new helmet had more padding so that made it a non-issue.

(Also I try not to wear a helmet when utility riding... Except I got a full face helmet for the scooter bc of being cold in the winter...

@ascentale @bikenite A7. I have not had this problem. I wear a neck gaiter up over my nose (I don’t like swallowing bugs, also it protects me from the sun). Perhaps it also keeps my chin strap from irritating me?

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A7. When we retired our old helmet and replaced it with a better quality one, a POC, we were surprised the dye in the straps rubs off on our neck. Solution is probly to wash those straps well—but we’ve never gotten a round tuit! We just wash our neck instead. But your question reminds us to wash those straps, and we will tonight!

@oheso @ascentale @bikenite Nope. I'm just that oblivious. I do the ride and fiddle with the helmet... try toget it "right..." we end the ride and I take it off and there's a pen wedged between the vents.
There was also the time I rode the 50 mile Tuesday Morning ride in the wind ... went to get in the car I had then to zip out to singing and OOPS it's in the shop so sprinted that 7 miles and rode back... Then hopped on the Western Flyer Repro Retro clunker for the Level 1 ride and was SO TIRED I could hardly keep up with the slowest ones... every pedal stroke a strain, pulled in, and realized the kickstand had been jammed into the tire.
Fortunately I had 5 more miles with a tailwind to basically e-z pedal coast home or I'd have cramped up... but that was definietly the toughes rdie day tho' I've done more miles (it was 'just' 83)....

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A7. I cannot say I have had this problem. My suggestion would be to sew a small tube of Ultrasuede or microfleece to cover the strap and buckle, if possible.

@ascentale @bikenite

My forehead, and the back of my scalp, had a run of irritations from where the helmet padding sat.
When I was looking closely to see if there was anything worn or sharp on the padding, I caught a whiff of the result of repeatedly collecting and fermenting sweat. 🤮

Since then, I take my helmet into the shower with me after each ride, and no more skin problems or surprise stinkiness.

@pete @isol @ascentale @bikenite I switched to wearing a cycle cap last year, and it's been a game changer for this. I sweat heavily at the best of times, so the cap just goes through the wash every now and then, and the pads themselves rarely need a wash.
