"Lewisham’s two #Green councillors defected from #Labour, claiming they were “bullied out” for opposing the brutal destruction of #Gaza. And every single non-white voter names Palestine as the reason they can no longer back Labour.

While SW1 theorises that the Green surge is down to Polanski, SE4 reality says it’s 99% #Starmer." -- Aditya Chakrabortty

I can't help feeling that Morgan #McSweeney is getting too little credit here.

The Green surge shows British politics has reached a turning point - and it has surprisingly little to do with Zack Polanski | Aditya Chakrabortty

At a party event in a school hall in Lewisham, people told me how disillusionment with Labour has led to this moment, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot Yeah, I think it's obvious why people in general are now swaying towards the Greens, and it's many different reasons combined. Though, now having a charismatic leader in Zack Polanski, I think that is still cementing decisions, because he has made it a realistic option.

@simon_brooke I used to live in Lewisham (I moved away 10 years ago). There has always been a significant minority vote there for the Greens and they have easily been the second choice of voters with about 30% of the vote to labour 60% but frustrated by the FPTP system,. In my time they even had one or two councilors.
These days there are many reasons - including the Labour Party sell out to Israeli interests on Gaza - why some of the previous Labour voters are now defecting, it's not that the voters have changed it's their perception of what the two parties respectively stand for that has.

@marjolica @simon_brooke always is a big word - but there was an Ecology Party candidate in the 1983 general election in Lewisham East! Way back in the 80s both L East and L West were held by tories. Interesting that Rosamund Kissi-Deborah stood as the Green candidate in 2018 (byelection) and 2019.
