BBC: Fisherman fleeing elephants killed by crocodile in Zambia
I read the other articles in that magazine on elephants. Its amazing the primitive technology they are using to try and keep elephants out of their gardens. High voltage electric fence run off of solar has been used successfully in other parts of africa for elephants and othe wildlife. If the local economy depends on animal tourism there are solutions.
@ai6yr @oldoldcojote Playing the sound of bees also works. Elephants apparently hate bees as they can sting them up the trunk.
David Attenborough told me this. On TV, not in person! 😉
@NormanDunbar @ai6yr @oldoldcojote Yes! I've read about conservation projects where bee keepers are paired with crop farmers. The bee keepers get hive space, and the elephants *really* don't like the bees, so they stay away.
@ai6yr Oh wow, must've been a gruesome scene, all those dead elephants killed by a crocodile, no wonder the fishermen ran away from it.
@me_valentijn @hareldan @ai6yr LOL. I don’t recall an animal horror flick about elephants, maybe it’s their time. :)
@me_valentijn @hareldan @ai6yr @CStamp There was one that scared the crap out of me as a child. I think Elizabeth Taylor was in it. There was a stampede through a house, if I remember.
Had nightmares for weeks!
"...Dean Nyirenda was returning from a fishing trip with two friends on Wednesday when they bumped into the elephants. They ran away, with Nyirenda diving into a stream near the Luangwa River.
"That is when he was attacked by a crocodile by biting his right thigh," local police chief Robertson Mweemba told journalists. ..."
Running away from a herd of elephants
Bit by a crocodile
He bled to death on a riverbank
The creature it did smile
He tried to beat off the croc
With a very large stick
But the animal got a a big bite in
The man bled very thick
Alas what is the tale here
That I dare not dream
Avoid annoying elephant herds
And no diving in a crocodile stream
(with apologies to the man's family, of course).
