The answer comes a bit late because I have been struggling with this awful heathbell.
I have read a lot about @bonfire and although I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, it seems to me that it's a perfect harbour for self-aware communities with a global vision and permanent goal.
On the other hand, I have already had the chance to try #Nodebb.org and I have seen it's a brilliant tool to work on specific or special projects or campaigns. So my idea was to combine both and use Nodebb.org as a special permanent workshop integrated into a larger commune house.

With the power of the Fediverse you could run both and when you post on one you can view it on the other. I think. NodeBB is threadiverse, so there are some quirks, but prettysure it works. But I don't think you could join them directly.
Yes to Bonfire being great for communities.
