@bikenite @ascentale A1 hi from Highcliffe-on-Sea where the rain has been quite depressing but when the sun has been out, it's been actually warming.

What's new on my bike is a long drop rear brake calliper. The old Shimano R7000 has always been a marginal fit, and after last week's roaring success with the mudguards, everything had shifted so the pads were rubbing on the tyre. This is acknowledged by experts as being a Bad Thing. I shopped around for a long drop calliper, and then saved myself £££ by salvaging a Textro R539 from the hangar queen, and also saved myself a wasted nearly-new rear brake cable by clipping the existing one right at the crimp so there was still some spare. Be prepared to shout "<name of offspring of deity of choice>!" when the crimp flies past your ear. A bit of fettling and presto, a safe and cheap rear brake.

Bonus, when I went to remove the _front_ calliper from the hangar queen, it had corroded in place. So I felt even better with my salvage! #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1.

Posting from the ‘burbs of Minneapolis.

Been doing biz with a mobile repair shop (JV Bike Repair, for those in the Minneapolis area), getting my bikes ready for riding. I rotate 5 bikes (4 acoustic; 1 ebike).

Latest project is a rear wheel rebuild for a Priority Current ebike. They under-engineered the wheel & it’s been shredding spokes since I bought it, so it’s mostly been confined to the stable. Hope the rebuild solves it. #bikenite

@bikenite @ascentale City near Frankfurt, Germany, as usual. Still waiting for spring to arrive.
Last week temperatures still were around freezing point and some snow flakes showed up again. My tyres on my bike are not best for such conditions and it easily gets slippery on cold wet streets, so I used my bicycle only once to help my old father in law switch from Windows to Linux.

Dead chuffed with 2nd hand water-proof luggage set I picked up in vinted and eBay. Succeeded in keeping my kit bone dry over 8 days / 500km of very damp riding

The newest part on my bike is the rear tire. The old developed a serious bulge, emergency stop at the LBS, which only had one tire of a useable size. It's a bit wider than I prefer, but it has kept me rolling. Which reminds me that I need to order tires of the size that I actually want.

@ascentale @bikenite A1: joining late after a busy evening here in the Hudson Valley, with deep snow everywhere and Sunday morning we’re supposed to get windchills of -30˚F.

Did anyone else catch the livestream this morning by @pekkatahkola in Oulu, Finland? He was riding on a groomed bike path, using his phone to both film and communicate (how does anyone DO that?)

It was inspiring to see the wide bike paths, separate (also groomed) ski trails, easy access to main bldgs…

Oh what's new... hmm... probably the layer of salt and grime! Two weekends ago, we got more snow than we've had in a decent number of years. I kept my bike parked for about a week, but I've been out 3 times within the past week, and it's been... a time!

I've also added purple fairy lights to my wheels recently, so she's looking marvelous.

One thing from a bit over a week ago (i.e. before the memorial ride last weekend) is that I found a rubber o-ring of appropriate length for securing the 3D printed bicycle ornament on my handlebar as its clamp tension wore out rather quickly and it started to fall off.

An orange 3D printed road bicycle with a clamp below the rear wheel printed from the same material in the same go. The camp sits on a black handlebar and is secured by a black o-ring going around the handlebar and pulling from both sides on the slit between rear wheel and clamp.

@ascentale @bikenite A1. #BikeNite Posting from Ventura County, California again. Every once in a while I search around to see if I can find my Pivot Shuttle MTB ebike battery for sale (darfon brand). This week I found a new one on ebay, so figured I should not pass up the opportunity. It wasn't dirt cheap and the battery is rare enough that I kind of doubt anyone would bother to make a counterfeit one, but we'll see. It arrives next week. My current battery is around 5 years old and has lost 1/5th of its capacity. It is still usable, but having a spare should increase the overall life of the bike, without having to resort to making sketchy modifications.

@bikenite @ascentale Upper Peninsula of Michigan, US. Today my freewheel skipped a bit, probably because of some water (then ice) inside blocking the pawls. This weekend I'll take it apart and relube.

Redline Conquest cyclocross bike set up as single speed, parked on a fence by a snowy frozen pond. Friend "Cool Rock" (large rock painted yellow with sunglasses) is obscured by a snow drift.

@bikenite @ascentale @josh 😬 hoping it's temporary because my only experience is of worn out pawls a long walk from home, and I wouldn't fancy it in that weather! #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Posting from the western front of Portland OR, where we are besieged by the clear blue sky and bright sunshine of a false spring.

I tuned my own derailleur for the first time recently, and not only did I do it right, I managed to get the chain to stop slipping in high gear, so I can once again use all nine gears.

@ascentale @bikenite @yantor3d I was well chuffed that I could sort out the rear shifter on my Mum's bike a few months back, she was impressed! A good skill to share! #BikeNite

@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite

Lovely satisfying sound tick tick tick of a clean chain on clean cassette and well adjusted gears - especially in the relative peace of a workshop

I love tuning / indexing gears - I have to restrain my self from asking strangers at traffic lights (whose gear slipping and rattling has been annoying me) if they would mind stepping off the bike for 10 mins so I can fix it

I know how to do that. Ive done it successfully. I just hate doing it so much I let things get really bad and take it to my local bike shop. When they're not closed for the season here.

@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite yay!

that's something I found gets easier with just doing it more often too, first couple of times I tried it I was all "...thumbs?" but now I'm like "oooooh okay, I think I'm getting this." Not up to _confident_ yet, but. :D

@moira @ascentale @bikenite Practice makes permanent...

I'm amused by my bike stand. It's a benchtop repair stand, but because I'm allergic to permanence, it's screwed to a scrap of plywood that I clamp to my workbench :)

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Sydney, Australia.

I'm back from shopping and my "it's not *that* worn out" front tyre is apparently that worn out after all. So last week's purchase of spare tyres will be in use earlier than planned.

I have also bought cheap generic "M5 - 0.8 Coarse x 5mm Stainless Steel 304 Cup Point Grub Screw" rather than 5x the price Rohloff oil drain hole plugs because I couldn't find my spare one of those. It's in the garage. Somewhere. Probably.

@ascentale @bikenite A1: North King County like usual. Nothing really new with my bike this week, but I did get tossed by that stupid F***ING curb gap that I always take perpendicular to avoid being tossed by it but NOT THIS TIME, APPARENTLY

(i am fine. i have a bandaid on my left pointer finger. It doesn't even hurt.)

@ascentale @bikenite A1: from the tarmac at DCA. I’ve been in DC all week for work so no biking for me even if I wanted to bike share since there’s frozen ice covering everything out here! #Bikenite

An electric scooter parked partially buried in snow on a DC city street at night, with a snow-covered sidewalk and buildings illuminated in the background.
