It’s tough to make #pottery with this type of clay that we would deem functional. I’ve attempted to do so by combining it with commercially mined materials that help decrease porosity (or encourage vitrification.) In the end, I decided to honor its natural qualities instead of trying to force it to be something it isn’t. (Beautiful life lesson, right?) This is a sculptural vessel I made last year with minimally processed #Florida clay. #WildClay

A textured, cream-colored bowl with a raised geometric repeating V pattern, held in a hand against a green background. The V pattern echos the shape of the vessel which has a narrow foot and wide mouth. The mouth has a downward curve to it. The granular quality of the clay is visible. It contains black speckles—probably fossil material.

Last pot of the year! I made a second version of the terracotta amaryllis vase at the request of a neighbor. He and his wife are also craftspeople—she makes #pottery and he fashions highly polished wood lids to fit her vessels. This will be her Christmas gift. I offered to deliver it to their home so that I can peek inside their studio.

Since this is the second iteration of this design, I tweaked a couple of details. Iteration is how potters make progress. Can you spot the differences?

A beautifully crafted ceramic vase featuring an ornate floral design in shades of brown and green, with a fluted top and textured accents. The background is a simple, neutral color that highlights the vase's intricate details. The vase is decorated with terra sigillata made with clay from Alabama, New Mexico and Arizona.
