Large rhino-like brontotheres roam a semitropical forest. Dog-sized, three-toed horses dart between the trees. The cat-like nimravid and bear dogs stalk their prey. The climate cools and forests alter to dryer grasslands. Saber tooth cats and camels get replaced by mountain lions and deer. Paleontologists learn more about the ancient animals and environment with every new fossil they discover.

Current view from Yosemite National Park shows the accumulation of snow from the previous storm system and a very nice clear blue sky. This break in the weather should last for a few days, with rain in the forecast on Tuesday. Half Dome is in the center of the image. Snow-covered trees and snow-covered slopes, lit by the morning sun, extend from the foreground to the horizon. Some of the steeper rock faces are free of snow, showing off the geologic form and features that surround Yosemite Valley. Thanks to the Yosemite Conservancy and the National Park Service for providing these beautiful images.

I stopped the truck along White Canyon Road North when I spotted this interesting sight. Flags of thin white sandstone have broken off from the rim and migrated down this shallow wash to give the appearance of stepping stones up the hillside. I didn't climb up as they looked fragile.

The geology of the park is visible in the middle ground, where sunlit slopes and rock walls can easily be seen. Half Dome is the prominent feature on the center right. Snow is falling today in Yosemite National Park. The trees in the foreground are beginning to show an accumulation of snow, though some of the green is still visible. Geological features, evident in yesterday’s view, are obscured today by snow and clouds. Half Dome, which on a clear day would stand out prominently on the center right, is hidden entirely in this view from today. Snow piles up in the immediate foreground while the sky color is primarily grey and white. It will be interesting to see how much snow this storm leaves over the next few days.
