FYI all, portainer is giving away 3 node business licenses. https://www.portainer.io/take-3

When I signed up for the freebie I noticed they've added #kubernetes support since the last time I visited their site, so I'm interested in checking how well that interacts with #talos.

Some of my #homelab machines currently just run a few containers in #docker_compose stacks for services my #homeassistant server is using like node red and I've been using #portainer for simple things like checking status or restarting things without having to ssh into those workers. Most of those containers are going to get migrated into my #k8s cluster, so it'll be interesting to see how well it works as a quick web interface.

Self-hosted #mastodon hurdle #1 crossed - I upgraded to 4.5.4 earlier today. In #portainer I did the "update stack" to repull the images. After I did that, all the containers disappeared which was a bit nerve-wracking. I hit the button a second time and they were all recreated.

That seemed fine but it was kind of a surprisingly long time before Mastodon was up and responsive. After it went from the Synology "I dunno" page to the Mastodon page, it was the default "Something went wrong" for some time. I guess I just need to be patient on these.

I thought I would have to re-apply my changes to increase the posting character limit but if this posts successfully then I didn't. All in all, this has been less trouble and less admin burden than I expected.

Update: Looks like only the JavaScript part of the hack survived and I still need to go fart with Ruby.

Hello #Fediverse! Time for a proper #Introduction.

I’m a hobbyist developer and engineer (outside the tech industry) who loves building tools for education and personal use. I’m currently focused on:

🐍 #Python & #Django – Working through a 30-day library challenge right now!

💻 #Linux – Running #Fedora on my System76 laptop.

🏠 #HomeLab – Managing an #OpenMediaVault setup on a Ugreen DXP2800, plus lots of #Docker and #Portainer tinkering.

🗺️ #Geospatial – Exploring data science projects.

Current Projects:

DITS: A custom issue tracker application.

Devnexus: A lite weight TUI issue and pull request application

mgl_website: My MickGeekLabs.org website and blog

Byte_Board_Blog: My personal blog project.

Pushing code to my local #Gitea (MickGeekLabs) and GitHub.

When I’m not debugging, I’m likely hanging out with my 16-year-old ginger tabby cat. 🐈

Looking forward to connecting with the #SelfHosted, #Python, and #Dev community here!

A busy home lab and developer workspace featuring a wooden desk with a laptop on a stand, two monitors, and a mechanical keyboard. To the right, a black wire shelving unit is stacked with networking hardware, including a network switch and a compact two-bay NAS. The setup is filled with visible cabling, a printer, and several tech equipment boxes on the floor, including a DeskPi RackMate box, reflecting a functional and active technical environment.

Still looking for a good container manager.

Unfortunately, #Arcane is living up to its dictionary definition. I like all of the information and power it gives me, but I prefer the ease with which I can just copy and paste my Docker Compose into #Dockge. #Portainer looks overly complicated for my needs.

I want Dockge, but with just a bit MORE. What’s a good one to try out?
