A bitterly cold Arctic airmass that has overspread the eastern Great
Lakes, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast following a pair of cold
front passages is expected to persist through Sunday. Forecast highs range

digits and teens elsewhere, particularly through the morning hours.
Conditions are expected to moderate through the early part of the week,
with highs Monday and Tuesday increasing by around 10 degrees or so each
day.

A Pacific system and accompanying influx of moisture will continue to
overspread the Pacific Northwest east through the northern Great Basin and

An Arctic airmass filtering down across the eastern Great Lakes, Ohio
Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will persist through Sunday in the wake
of a cold front exiting off the East Coast and with high pressure dropping
south from Canada. A combination of record low max temperatures and record
low min temperatures will be possible especially across the Mid-Atlantic

normal. Strong winds going through this evening and overnight coupled with
temperatures dropping down into the single digits and locally below zero
across portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will result in
dangerously cold wind chills. These wind chills may reach as low as 30
degrees below zero across New York and the interior of New England. These
wind chills will pose a life-threatening risk of hypothermia and frostbite
to exposed skin. Meanwhile, some lingering snowfall will be expected this

A clipper system with a pair of cold frontal passages whipping through the
Northeast this morning will bring very gusty winds and a surge of Arctic
air today. Gusts upwards of 60-70 mph are expected through this evening,
especially across the southern Mid-Atlantic and along the central/southern

A shortwave mid-level trough located upwind of the Great Lakes will help
to sustain various surface frontal systems, moving them southeastward
through the Great Lakes region over the next few days. This will bring
snow and wintry precipitation throughout the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley through Friday evening into early Saturday morning, before moving
into the Northeast. The Northeast will see snowfall begin on Friday
afternoon, continuing through Saturday as the systems make their way
offshore. Portions of the Mid-Atlantic, including Virginia and North
Carolina, should also expect to see precipitation, albeit lighter and in
the form of mixed precipitation and rain.

Off the back of these frontal systems, a blast of arctic air is set to
return to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, bringing back frigid conditions
over the weekend. Additionally, as the frontal systems depart, strong
winds, potentially gusting over 50mph, will exacerbate extremely low wind
chills. Wind chill

A low pressure system currently located on the Gulf Coast will continue to
bring rain and thunderstorms to the Southeast, and light wintry
precipitation to the Mid-Atlantic. Relatively warm water temperatures in
the Gulf will continue to be transported into the Southeast and will
support widespread precipitation through Thursday morning. Meanwhile, a
front over the Mid-Atlantic will be supported by colder air coming from
the Great Lakes region, bringing light snow and wintry precipitation in
southern Virginia and North Carolina. Precipitation associated with this
system is expected to subside in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic by

will continue until the overnight hours.

A low pressure wave tracking east toward the southern Appalachians early
this morning has drawn moisture and instability from the warm waters of
the Gulf to support widespread showers across the South and some organized
thunderstorms near the Gulf coast. The cold front trailing southwest from
the low pressure center will steadily advance these showers and embedded
thunderstorms from west to east across the Gulf Coast this morning, and
then across much of the Southeast today into tonight. Meanwhile, a
replenishment of arctic air spreading into the Great Lakes and the
Northeast is supporting a period of light snow across the Mid-Atlantic
early this morning. The snow should taper off by daybreak but another
patch of light snow and wintry mix is expected to move across North
Carolina from west to east later today through tonight as the low pressure
wave will take some time to move through the region.
