@zzepposs@chaos.social TY. 😊
@ozoned @julian @worksonmymachine Currently listening, and have spun up different forums using NodeBB in the past. I like how its lightweight for servers to run.
@Josh@social.joshbaileycreates.com @julian@activitypub.space light weight and it felt SUPER snappy. Absolutely incredible. Julian and cofounder did a great job with it. 😊
Thanks for listening/watching. 😊
Thank you to @julian@activitypub.space for joining me for another episode of Works On My Machine LIVE!
We installed and discussed NodeBB. NodeBB is a next generation community forum software that is powerful, mobile-ready, easy to use, fediverse powered, extensible, and light weight.

@ozoned@btfree.social @nelfan@gotosocial.social to be specific, NodeBB is both.
I built it against the microblog-iverse and only after that was done did I realize the threadiverse model also fit.
Think of NodeBB as straddling the fence between the two. We speak both AP dialects, there shouldn't be any major implementors were incompatible with.
@julian@activitypub.space @nelfan@gotosocial.social that's awesome. Hopefully someday we'll be able to bring the "dialects" together. And I love the term calling then dialects. Fits so well.
If there was a Fedi-Dating platform...
1. what features would you find most valuable?
2. what features do you like from existing dating sites?
3. and what features do you dislike from existing dating sites?
4. what safety features would you need in order to feel safe on the platform?

@alice@lgbtqia.space I think @cubicgarden@mas.to was working on something like this as well. I believe he discussed it during an unconference.
@ozoned
The answer comes a bit late because I have been struggling with this awful heathbell.
I have read a lot about @bonfire and although I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, it seems to me that it's a perfect harbour for self-aware communities with a global vision and permanent goal.
On the other hand, I have already had the chance to try #Nodebb.org and I have seen it's a brilliant tool to work on specific or special projects or campaigns. So my idea was to combine both and use Nodebb.org as a special permanent workshop integrated into a larger commune house.
@bonfire @julian
@nelfan@gotosocial.social @bonfire@indieweb.social @julian@activitypub.space
With the power of the Fediverse you could run both and when you post on one you can view it on the other. I think. NodeBB is threadiverse, so there are some quirks, but prettysure it works. But I don't think you could join them directly.
Yes to Bonfire being great for communities.
@ozoned It's so bad out there in the healthcare world. Hope you're on the path to recovery!
@lich_silvae@masto.fediverse.games thank you. Surgery is the 22nd. So soon hopefully. Outpatient surgery so hopefully it is an easy recovery.
@TCMuffin@toot.wales thank you. Yeah it sucks. I'm fortunate. I'm mentioning it because I'm sure there's a majority that could afford it. But hopefully something can change.
And I'm looking forward to resolving it. Just in tune for Fedicon in Aug as well.
@ozoned oh my.
First of all I had no idea you had that going on, so I’m sorry to read it and glad you’re getting care! The system and affordability is dreadful for folks.
Absolutely the kind of thing that could be fixed and made more accessible for all, not just those able to pay from their own resources - if there was collective will and compassion.
@andypiper@macaw.social Yeah, don't talk too much about my ailments. Went to Disney and it was agony, but kids had fun so that's what matters. 😊
And yeah, Capitalism isn't really about compassion. This just makes me realize how fortunate I am to be able to cover this. But holy shit man. This insanity.
Hope you're doing well. Saw you on the Matrix update video. 😊
Good day all! Upcoming episode of Fireside Fedi!
Special Guest: @theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social
Industrialised information consumption apparatus, FOSS fanatic, misguided believer in a better world, and owner of too many opinions. My job right now is to replace gesture typing in #Heliboard; It helps to have more people contributing data, or spreading the word around! If you follow me for Heliboard stuff, send me a message I will follow you back.
So don't miss it!

@ozoned Jeez… Systems aside; Good luck!
(Also, isn’t there $6,876.10 unaccounted for there?)
@gnilleps@mastodon.art insurance forces them to lower the amount.
So I need to have surgery. I have Meralgia paresthetica which causes numbness, pain, soreness, etc in my thighs. So the doctor is going to do surgery to snip the nerves so I don't feel anything anymore. It's fairly common actually.
Just got the estimate. For a 2 hour surgery the total is $28,650.87. The insurance covers $19,617.82. I have to pay $2,156.95. I'm very fortunate that I can afford the expense. But this whole system is just not sustainable. Absolutely crazy amount to not be in pain constantly.
@ozoned@btfree.social what's a framework. All you need is jQuery and some elbow grease.
@julian@activitypub.space man after my own heart. My scripts are bash leveraging jq heavily. 😊 It's what I know. Too old to change now! 😁
@ozoned@btfree.social @feff@comicscamp.club Yeah, no Docker please. Install it on bare metal old school
@julian@activitypub.space @feff@comicscamp.club bare metal like a real man! Don't need none of these containers in the cloud with their CI/CD LLM's PITA ASAP BRB BBQ FFS BBL
@feff@comicscamp.club @julian@activitypub.space @gnilleps@mastodon.art
Node.JS and I are NOT friends. HOWEVER ... there's a docker container thankfully. But I'm checking with Julian to find out the recommended install method.
This is why I NEVER got into webdev. I'd ask friends how to make anything and the answer was always
"Use this framework for X and use this other framework for Y."
Me: "What about Z?"
Them: "Oh you need 10 more frameworks for that! SEE! IT'S EASY!"
@ozoned
Is there any plugin or so to integrate https://nodebb.org/ into a @bonfire server ?
@julian
@nelfan@gotosocial.social @bonfire@indieweb.social @julian@activitypub.space
This is an interesting question. They're two completely separate software stacks. NodeBB is for federated forum servers. While Bonfire is more a roll your own community social network server. What would you imagine this looks like? What would be your end goal with a plugin in Bonfire? Not judging at all. It sounds like an interesting idea to be sure. 😊 And you have the folks that could work together to make something happen if there's an idea there.
@feff@comicscamp.club @julian@activitypub.space @gnilleps@mastodon.art
But chaos is fun! And we get to learn so much! Looking at the docs, it should be smooth. So that means I need to find ways to create CHAOS! 😁
@ozoned@btfree.social it shall be terrifying.
@julian@activitypub.space if one of us doesn't end up crying and balled up in a corner, then I haven't done my job properly. 😁
